Leave
fascinated and terrified in equal measure. This night of discussion, live
poetry, immersive audio from In the Dark Radio and Poe-inspired music from
Kevin Le Gendre’s band REAP will steep you in the sublime poetry of a
spectacular literary figure.
The
master of melodrama, mystery and macabre, the eerie Edgar Allan Poe has
frightened and delighted since The Raven found an audience in the 1840s. Known
primarily as the father of crime fiction, fans of his nightmarish poetry
include Charles Baudelaire, Lou Reed and Tracy Emin.
Speakers
for the evening include: actor Paapa Essiedu; director and founder of the Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University Dr. Linnie Blake; BBC Radio 3 broadcaster, writer and music journalist
Kevin Le Gendre and the musicians Beibei Wang, Mirayam Solomon and Roderick
Corbeau. For the final twenty minutes of the evening, In the Dark Radio will
plunge the audience into pitch black, so that you can feel the full effects of
Poe’s icy poetry as it swirls around the atmospheric room of Wilton’s Music
Hall turning it into a haunted palace. Poet in the City provides a dynamic platform for
contemporary and classic poetry, curating imaginative events which bring poetry
to life for a twenty-first century audience. Through our work, we have fostered
an appetite for accessible, challenging and inspiring poetry performances.
