Steve Pretty is best known as bandleader of internationally-renowned brass pioneers Hackney Colliery Band (‘one of the greatest live bands that we have in this country’ – BBC Radio 2), but he is also a composer, performer and podcaster with an enduring fascination with what music is, where it comes from, and why it even exists in the first place.

Here he explores some of these questions through words and music with some of his friends and collaborators including Professor Chris Lintott (BBC Sky at Night), harpist Valeria Clarke and the Filament Choir, led by Filament composer and director Osnat Schmool (recently composed for Macbeth, Shakespeare’s Globe, The Crucible, NT & West End). He’ll also be joined by some Hackney Colliery Band colleagues to play a one-off mini set of some of the band’s classic material, as well as previewing and discussing some new work from their forthcoming album.

This unique evening of music and discussion will form part of Steve’s new podcast series of the same name. Whether you’re a musical novice, seasoned professional, or just interested in why Steve’s career seems increasingly to be based around playing conch shells, this show will help you to hear music in a whole new way.
