It’s high time we offered you another chance to see what’s happening
behind all the hoardings. We do our best to nose around with a camera
once a week and, by Jove, there’s plenty worth seeing. This, for instance…
Another peek behind the scenes
Impressive, huh? Atmospheric, too. We realise it simply wouldn’t do for the building to carry on in this state but we’re really enjoying seeing the phase that it’s currently passing through. The Mistress of the Blog breaks out in goosebumps as she does her weekly rounds and counts herself mighty privileged indeed to be able to witness all this at first hand. After all, it’s not every day that you get to see one of our much-loved and familiar old fireplaces hanging half way up a wall.
Anyone recognise this one? Of course you do.
You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs, as they say (we like a nice cliche), which is why things are looking a bit like this…
But, very soon, it will all be put back together again, carefully and re-using original materials wherever possible, such as these stone stairs, currently stacked up behind the main staircase…
and these floorboards…
and there are already signs of bricklaying…
There are goings on up on the roof too. Here’s our Site Foreman, Tim, sorting out some of our many ailing chimneys:
while his colleague, Michael, was in the basement contemplating raising these iron beams that afternoon…
There are some wonderful sights to be seen outside the building too. Take this view of the auditorium, for instance, rarely seen from this perspective. It looks rather cute and dinky from up here, doesn’t it?
How about this splendid vista along the scaffolding walkway - those are the second floor windows on the left.
From up here, it’s possible to see just how much the poor old building has been crumbling…
cracking…
and peeling…
Good job we’ve got the chaps from W Anelay to take care of it all for us. We’ll leave you with a couple of lovely images of our Learning & Participation Officer, David, snapping the Mistress of the Blog snapping him…
and having a laugh…
It’s a pleasure to share all this with you - hope you’re enjoying it. Back with more again soon.
